“Up there with “The Best”
Firstly I have to say that the full Cornish breakfast is, in my opinion, the best in the town. They use all local, quality, ingredients, lovely sausages that you know have been made with real pork meat. I have also enjoyed the smoked salmon with scrambled egg, which is really good.
We live in Padstow and use the Basement regularly, having eaten there for breakfast, lunch and dinner on many occasions. Sometimes it is just a unique place to just sit with a bottle of wine and “People watch”, and now that they have their new outside area completed, it is possible in all weathers.
We went for dinner last Saturday night and it really was truly a wonderful dining experience. The food was stunning to look at and absolutely delicious. The service was friendly and all the waiting staff had a really good knowledge of the food they were serving to you. The atmosphere was buzzing, and the new outside covered area offers the most wonderful unobstructed view of the harbor, (at night the harbour lights reflecting in the quay, make it quite special).
The Basement is really up there with the best! Tina C
We went here in February whilst on a weekend away in Cornwall for a family member birthday!!
Taken me a little time to write the review. I can honestly say it was lovely.
One the the people with us only really eats Chicken and the Chef made a special effort to cook him something that was not on the menu!!
Short and sweet review, but was a great evening!! Helen C
I can’t praise The Basement enough, whether you come for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just coffee all you get is excellent food and service. We come here every year in April and spend time at the Basement and never disappointed. Congratulations to all the staff you have made it one of the best places to eat in Padstow. Mark B
“Fantastic food and wine”
We enjoyed a three night stay in Padstow and our meal at The Basement was by far the best we had. The service was efficient and friendly, we recommend the steak and the local (Camel Valley) wine.Trees G
“Best meal ever.”
We found the The Basement Restaurant whilst staying overnight in Padstow on a short break without the children. We searched long and hard to find that special place that looked like it had a cozy atmosphere, the right menu at the right prices. We found it hard to find anywhere that was did not have a celebrity link which pushed the prices up or that were so very Michelin starred that it was impossible to get a table.
We rang to inquire about a table and were pleasantly surprised to find they had one for 7.30. We arrived and were greeted by a lovely friendly face who showed us to our table.
We had the most incredibly tender and delicious Chateaubriand between us served with perfectly steamed broccoli accompanied by a cheeky bottle of Rioja. We managed a dessert too…amazing
I would highly recommend The Basement to anyone who really appreciates good honest food. Not a place for those who like their plates piled high with chips or those who claim to enjoy the minimalist cuisine .
We will be back!
Food was lovely, great choice. Child friendly with their own menu and not just fish and chips. The staff made the place, ever so helpful and nothing was too much

Great food, plenty of choice but enough not to confuse the indecisive one! Lovely cosy atmosphere and very naturally friendly service. A simple combination of fresh food, tasty cooking, good portions, good wine. What more do you need?
“Best food in Padstow”
This has to be the best restaurant in Padstow! We have just enjoyed a four night break in Padstow eating out in different restaurants and this was our favorite. The food was as good as we’ve ever had anywhere. It was absolutely amazing. The staff were all so welcoming and friendly with a relaxed atmosphere. If you only eat out once in Padstow then try the Basement.

Small intimate restaurant which just feels right from service through to food. I really didn’t want to leave. You must have the doughnuts!!!
The food was great, the atmosphere very relaxed and happy – the service was outstanding. There was one waitress and the chef who also came out to wait on when it got busy. The basement is a must.
We ate outside under the big cover with some excellent patio heaters, as we had large dog. The seating is adequate but some benches have no backrests.
The menu at lunch is a bit limited but we all found something. The soup was thick and creamy with 3 wedge of bread. One had a sandwich which came with doorstep type slices of thick brown bread that she couldn’t quite manage, but vg just the same. Two of us had the chicken & bacon burger with loads of cheese. This came with a salad on the burger and a small bucket of thick homemade chips. All excellent with a relatively quick service.

We booked this restaurant purely by chance while spending a few days in Padstow and did we strike lucky! I made a point of telling the chef that he’d presented me with the best fillet steak I’d ever had together with a fabulous bottle of wine! The whole experience was thoroughly enjoyable and I’m only sorry that we don’t live closer.

“Wedding Anniversary – they made it so special”
We love The Basement so we were made up when Dave & Em let us hold our Wedding Anniversary party there. The evening started with Champagne & canapés accompanied with live music from Toby (a real treat!, as he catered for all music tastes). Once inside the restaurant we were able to relax and were looked after brilliantly as usual. We were able to personalise our menu. We had 22 friends, some of who had not eaten at the restaurant before – they are raving about not only the great food but the great service. We are already planning the next party!!! As regular customers at The Basement we cant speak highly enough of it and if you’re in Padstow, bearing in mind all the other places to eat, this is a MUST visit – you won’t be disappointed.

Booked on the internet, never tried this restaurant before. We had Sunday lunch which was thoroughly enjoyable and must admit we ate everything on the plate. For afters we had berry crumble with ice cream, it was the best crumble we had ever tasted. We will definitely be booking again next year.

“A really good restaurant”
We ate here earlier on this evening and thoroughly enjoyed both the food and the experience. Our food and wine was excellent and the young lady who served us was great. The goats cheese bread pudding starter was divine, and the main courses (tagine and pressed pork belly) were great. We’ll be back tomorrow!
